It was 4 a.m. more than 50 years ago, when the Rev. Dr. John Whitney MacNeil woke his wife, Judy MacNeil Merrill. "He woke me up and said, 'We are going to start a retirement community, our church is,' " said Merrill. "I replied, 'That's nice, dear. Go back to sleep.' " By 8 a.m., MacNeil was hard at work making the retirement community a reality. And on Jan. 15, 1966, Plymouth Harbor opened. It was the first of its kind in Sarasota. Its main, 25-story tower overlooking the water provided extra appeal. Today, Plymouth Harbor is approaching its 50th anniversary.
